Their project Sky Doll is an incredibly beautiful comic series, which takes years to get a new volume out, but with good reason. The style, design and colours are perfect in every page.
Anyway, this is the cover of the one of the prequel comic collections (that I, sadly, have yet to read), that feature short stories, all drawn by differrent guest artists.
The cover is very detailed, busy, and yet is very clear, and not cluttered.
The secret lies in the colours, of course- if you look closer, you can see that figure in the centre is basically only various shades and hues of pink, with minimal addition of yellowish skintones and even less, a lot less, greens. Same goes to the other two figures (and a car) in front of her- all of their colours are warm, and they are dominated by pink, very light yellow and a bit of orange, with green only featured for adding depth or variation, and only in light tones.
In the background we see the imposing figure of yet another lady. Not counting her yellowish skintone, which actually binds all the figures in the picture together, she is coloured only with brown and green tones, a lot of them much darker than the rest of of the bubblegum colours that are featured in the picture. She creates a dark backdrop for the foreground colours, yet has a pink eye, the only pink detail in this figure, for balance.
Between the foreground and background is the dancing figure- and her colours reflect that- she has both the warm, bright pink tones from the foreground, and the dark green and brown tones from the background- she is the colour transition point for both the backdrop and the foreground.
These careful colour choices allowed the artist to go even further with the details, by adding a lot of carefully chosen patterns and gradients, which takes a lot of consideration and skill to pull off in a detailed and busy piece like this- and it works perfectly. The care given to the composition can be seen in the fact that the background figure has a seemingly random greenish patch of gradient on the side of her chest- it can be guessed that without it, the composition would be off.
